The Darkness
I chased the light down the brightened street
Racing beyond each crevice and feat
Jumping over curb and drain to greet
The shining light in eye's sight to meet
But the journey it carried on
And racing further with light in stare
a heart racing, the dark drew near
The edge of town from lightness bare
The darkness I feared would fine me there
But the journey it carried on
And into the forest, a path unclear
Eyes marked on the light beyond the fear
With freighted thoughts behind stone veneer,
Cracking, my face became flushed with tear
But the journey it carried on
Out of the forest and onto a lane
with body tired and muscle pained
Approaching a house, my head in deign
With my fist on the door, I thought in vein
But the journey it carried on
A shadow opened the creaking door
And outward toward me the darkness poured
"You cannot find the lightness" it swore;
A promise further breaking the deadened score
But the journey it carried on
The darkness invited me to be its guest
And as it led me into the blackness stressed:
"Herein lies the defeat of your quest
And now in this room you'll find your rest"
But the journey it carried on
Upon the bed draped in sadness, shamed
I laid my head upon hopeless thoughts, untamed
and staring at the ceiling, my heart it pained
but within me began a sudden ticking, lamed
But the journey it carried on
The ticking became louder and spoke to me:
"This darkness can be cured if you choose to be
The spark of lightness in this blackened sea"
An understanding that I forgot to see
But the journey it carried on
The ignition started with light ablaze
and cut through the blackness like a wave
Bright beams of sunlight through the foggy grave;
and love and truth and grace poured, brave
and the journey it carried on
The darkness shouted with a cocky sneer
"You cannot bring peace and grace to fear!"
I pulled the darkness in closer and said with revere
"The shadows cannot exist while I am here"
and the journey it carried on
I ran from the house with walls all shaking
and out the door as the floors were quaking
and from down the path I heard the echoed breaking
I picked up speed with inner light awaking
and the journey it carried on
Back into the city my mind had found peace
the frightening darkness and cloudiness ceased
I birthed the light that shone unleashed
and from the shadows I was released
and the journey it carried on
There is wisdom in this brightened quest
that the light exists within all unrest
that haunted shadows can only test
the strength we have but all are blessed
with a spark of light within their chest
and so the journey may carry on...
Racing beyond each crevice and feat
